IBM: Seeing the Light with Arvind Eye Hospital
On the forefront of innovation for over a century, IBM value investment in people development and offer numerous international development opportunities within the global organization. However the company was interested in developing a stand-out program that not only challenged managers to expand their thinking in totally new environments, but also gave something back to the communities in which they operate. IBM chose Emerging World as their delivery partner.
Four-week assignments were undertaken by ten members of IBM’s Top Talent population in a diverse range of organizations, working in areas including eye care, disability, sustainable livelihoods and education. The program incorporated a competitive selection process and connected participants with assignment opportunities that were specifically matched to their unique skills, development needs and personalities.
Work undertaken on the program between IBM and the Aravind eye hospital in India has been recognised as best practice in a case study in the periodical, Strategic HR Review. A number of partners have also been linked to the IBM On-demand community, an initiative which leverages further support using IBM’s extensive resource within India.
IBM believe the program developed with Emerging World boosts their ability to function as a globally integrated enterprise, because it enhances participants’ cultural understanding and builds expertise in emerging markets.
