The Opportunity

Microsoft wanted to create deeper employee engagement while supporting organizations across Africa.

Traditional volunteering often limits employees to short-term activities that provide limited organizational value. Microsoft sought a different model: one where employees could contribute their professional expertise to real challenges while developing their own leadership capability.

The ambition was to connect employees more meaningfully with the realities faced by organizations across African markets, strengthening both impact and personal growth.

The Journey

Together with Emerging World, Microsoft co-created MySkills4Afrika: a structured skills exchange programme linking employees with social impact organizations.

Participants worked alongside partner organizations on clearly defined organizational challenges. Assignments were delivered through a mix of virtual and in-person engagements, enabling participation at global scale.

Employees applied their professional skills in unfamiliar contexts, collaborating closely with local teams and navigating new cultural, economic and organizational realities.

Structured reflection helped participants step back, question assumptions, and apply what they learned in their leadership roles.

For partner organizations, the programme delivered targeted expertise that strengthened organizational capacity and strategic progress.

The Transformation

Since its launch, MySkills4Afrika has enabled hundreds of skills exchanges between Microsoft employees and organizations across Africa.

To date the programme has delivered:

  • 400 in-person exchanges
  • 300 virtual assignments
  • 650+ organizations supported across 33 countries
  • Participants consistently report leadership development benefits.
  • 99% reported positive development in leadership skills

The programme demonstrates how skills-based engagement can generate meaningful value for both employees and partner organizations. Together, these exchanges show how professional skills can create lasting value for communities while accelerating leadership growth.
