The Opportunity
Maersk wanted to create an experience that would stretch young executives early in their leadership careers. Understanding that technical capability alone would not prepare future leaders for a rapidly changing business environment, the company wanted participants to build adaptability, self-awareness and a stronger sense of purpose through hands-on engagement.
The programme aimed to develop leaders who could operate confidently across cultures and navigate complex challenges.
The Journey
Participants joined a seven-day programme in Kenya that combined experiential learning with structured reflection.
Working in small teams, they engaged with local communities and social impact organizations on real business and societal challenges. The experience required participants to collaborate in unfamiliar environments, adapt to new cultural contexts and explore different approaches to problem solving. Throughout the programme, reflection sessions encouraged participants to examine their assumptions, consider the wider impact of their decisions and think about how they wanted to lead in the future.
The Transformation
Over the course of the programme, 63 young executives worked alongside dedicated coaches and partner organizations.
The experience led to measurable shifts:
- 97% reported a greater ability to navigate intercultural environments
- 78% said the programme fundamentally deepened their understanding of purpose-driven leadership and personal transformation
Participants returned with broadened perspectives, strengthened confidence and a clearer understanding of the kind of leaders they aspire to be — within Maersk and beyond.
At the end of the programme, leaders left seeing more clearly where their expertise creates the greatest value.
